The May issue of Charter Connect Magazine brings into focus what it truly takes to build and sustain high-quality schools.

From classrooms to boardrooms, this issue highlights the people, practices, and systems that are shaping the future of public education across Alabama.

This month’s Charter Spotlight features i3 Academy, a school that continues to demonstrate what is possible when innovation meets intentional design. Their work reflects a broader shift in education—one that prioritizes student-centered learning and long-term success.

We also highlight Michelle Meeks of Breakthrough Charter School in our Teacher Spotlight. With more than 26 years in education, her story is a powerful reminder that relationships, consistency, and care remain at the heart of great teaching.

Behind every strong school is a strong system. In our Making of NSFA feature, we introduce Tamara Knight, whose work in school finance ensures that resources are aligned with impact. Her story underscores the importance of operational excellence in driving student success.

This issue also explores two critical levers for school improvement. Dr. Lacee Rodgers examines the role of instructional coaching in driving teacher growth and student achievement, while Natalie Tucker and Russell Raney provide insight into how strategic funding and financial systems expand access to high-quality educational opportunities.

In addition, readers will find updates from the Alabama State Board of Education, including policy and legislative developments that directly impact schools and families across the state.

And through the voices of Parent Voice Fellowship Cohort 4, we are reminded that families play a critical role in shaping the future of education. Their reflections highlight the power of informed, engaged advocacy.

Each story in this issue points to the same conclusion: strong schools are built intentionally—with the right people, the right support, and a shared commitment to students.
