When you meet Tamara Knight, Senior Accountant at New Schools for Alabama, you quickly sense her mix of calm professionalism and genuine warmth. With over 15 years of accounting experience—and six of those dedicated to school finance—Tamara is proof that behind every balanced budget is a passionate person who truly cares about impact.
Tamara is a proud mom of two amazing children, Kaleb and Madison, who keep her grounded, motivated, and laughing. “My family is my ‘why,’” she says. “They remind me of the importance of balance, purpose, and perseverance.” That sense of purpose flows naturally into her work, where she brings a sharp analytical mind and a heart for helping schools thrive.
Her love for accounting started early. “I’ve always had a love for structure, problem-solving, and understanding how things connect, and accounting naturally ties all of that together,” she explains. What keeps her passionate is seeing the bigger picture—how good financial management can change outcomes. “Every number tells a story, and I enjoy helping that story make sense.”
Tamara’s experience spans education, government, logistics, and hospitality, and each sector, she says, added a new layer of insight. “Government work sharpened my attention to compliance and accountability. Hospitality taught me flexibility and customer service. Logistics strengthened my process-improvement mindset.” At NSFA, she uses that blend of structure and innovation to help schools stretch every dollar without losing sight of their mission.
Of course, it’s not without challenges. “The biggest challenge is aligning limited funding with unlimited needs,” she admits. “Every school wants to give students the best, and it takes creativity to stretch resources without compromising quality.” But the rewards far outweigh the hurdles. “When thoughtful budgeting directly translates into better opportunities for students and stronger communities—that’s the real win.”
Ask her what part of her job excites her most, and she lights up: “Budget development energizes me the most. It’s where strategy and numbers meet.” She loves collaborating with teams, translating their goals into sustainable plans, and helping them see how their visions can come to life.
As a mentor, Tamara is as thoughtful as she is knowledgeable. “I focus on creating safe spaces for learning and sharing not just the ‘how,’ but the ‘why.’ Growth comes from both confidence and humility,” she says. Watching someone gain clarity or independence in their work brings her genuine joy.
Her advice for new school leaders is simple but powerful: “Budgeting isn’t just about numbers—it’s about priorities. When your budget reflects your values, every expenditure becomes intentional and impactful.” Looking ahead, she hopes to see “more streamlined funding systems and better technology to simplify compliance reporting,” giving schools more time to focus on students rather than spreadsheets.
Outside of work, Tamara’s world revolves around family, faith, and finding joy in small moments. “I love spending time with my kids—whether it’s Kaleb’s basketball games or visiting Madison at Alabama A&M,” she says. She also loves to travel, journal, and listen to music. Her church community, she adds, helps her stay centered and recharged.
And if she could have one superpower? “The ability to multiply time!” she laughs. “There’s never enough of it when you’re balancing work, family, and purpose.”
Whether she’s building a budget or building others up, Tamara brings clarity, heart, and excellence to everything she does—proving that at NSFA, great accounting isn’t just about numbers. It’s about making every number count.
