Bernard Mitchell

Bernard Mitchell is a name synonymous with transformative education in Alabama. His career is marked by a rich tapestry of roles, from Chief Academic Officer to Director of Federal Programs, each of which has imbued him with a nuanced understanding of education’s vast ecosystem.

Mitchell's story begins in the deep South, born the youngest of fifteen siblings. "First of all, I am the youngest boy of 9 males and the youngest of 15 children. My mother’s maiden name is Love, and it so greatly categorizes my family and how I was reared, yes, reared to be and to remain. I am so thankful to my mom, my dad, and my older brothers and sisters for providing stern, but loving, direction," Mitchell shares. Recently married to Tonya Hill Mitchell, he speaks of her with admiration, " I have found the good thing that the Bible refers to in Proverbs 18:22. Tonya is the mother of two adult sons, Michael Anthony and Davis. Not having any biological children of my own, they have helped to fill that void." This foundation of family love, as he describes, is central to his approach to education and leadership, offering him a grounded perspective amid the demands of his professional life.

Mitchell’s professional journey through various educational roles has taught him the importance of listening and patience, which are crucial for fostering an environment of growth and understanding. "Having served in so many varied roles, the greatest strength from the experience has been a calming desire to listen and a patience to respond," he explains. These experiences have shaped his educational philosophy, emphasizing collaborative progress over individual achievement. "If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you desire to go far, you go together," he notes, quoting a proverb that reflects his leadership style.

His passion for education was ignited by influential figures during his youth, such as his Geometry teacher, Willie Grant Jackson, who instilled the belief in the transformative power of education. This inspiration is what Mitchell aims to pass on: a relentless drive to foster environments where children can thrive academically and personally.

As the Director of Federal Programs on NSFA’s Finance Team, Mitchell is focused on creating supportive environments that prioritize connectivity and relationships. His goals are centered around holistic perspectives on curriculum development, data-informed decision-making, and mentorship. Mitchell applies a leadership philosophy that believes "everything rises and falls on leadership." He strives to empower his team, set clear visions, build strong relationships, and adapt to meet the evolving needs of education. "Leaders lead," he asserts. "I have decided to lead from the front. I am encouraging everyone to be pioneers and not procrastinators. One of my goals is to have everyone become more intentional about completing assignments. We must have a goal to never receive a phone call, email, or text stating that something is past due. I am determined to help establish a culture where we set the norm and not adjust."

Outside of his professional commitments, Mitchell enjoys sports, outdoor activities, and spending time with loved ones. These activities help him recharge and maintain the balance needed to continue his impactful work in education.

When asked for advice to his younger self, he replied, "Be kind to yourself, embrace your curiosity, and don’t let fear hold you back." This mindset reflects his approach to life and leadership, emphasizing growth, resilience, and staying true to one’s values.

Bernard Mitchell continues to inspire as a leader in education, driven by a profound connection to his roots and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of future generations. His story is a testament to the power of passionate, empathetic leadership in shaping the educational landscape, and we are ecstatic that he is a part of the NSFA team!
